Beirut Dive Sites

Shark Reefs

The "Shark Reefs"  are located about a 1000 meters offshore of the Sea Rock (Raouche).
The "AUB Wall" or "Sharks Hole", the site most famous  for sharks in Beirut, is located right off the coast on the street’s  edge The first one called "Sharks Reef" is formed by 5 reefs  next to each other ranging from a depth of 25 to 35 meters, with drop off from 40 to 60 meters. The site is washed by very strong Southern currents  bringing abundant marine life (including marine predators), and constantly renewing its waters. The "AUB Wall" or "Sharks Hole” is the site most famous for sharks in Beirut, right off the coast on the street’s edge. It is a site that drops off from 5 meters to some 500 meters, and where divers had often heard fishermen tale of the existence of many sharks surfacing every 10 years in huge numbers.

Cargo Ship Wreck

This cargo ship has been sunk  during the Lebanese civil war. It is located at 1 nautical mile in front  of the Sporting Club of Beirut. Members of the Big Bleu diving center,  the diving center based at the Sporting Club, dive frequently on this wreck.
Description of the site The wreck is located at a depth averaging between  15 and 20 meters, which it makes it easy to access. Visibility in this  area is generally good (during July the visibility is average and some times low). Currents are generally moderated but regular. Marine life  (fish, marine animals, moray eels …) is very abundant in this area  (wrecks are generally abundant in fish and other marine animals).

Raouche Area

A very beautiful site not to be missed.  This site is very easy to find located along the sea road, . You don't  need a boat to access to the water; you can get into the water from the beaches near the dive site. The depth of the site varies from 3 to 12  meters. There a multitude of small fish, octopi, sea urchins and shells.  This site contains some " mini-caves" full off small fishes.  A cold water current (south/north - probably a thermocline) is located  in this area at the depth of 6 meters. Very pleasant in the summer.

The Souffleur

This site is located at 10 Km south of Beirut. There are two ways of reaching "Le Souffleur".
20-30 minute boat dive or travel by car (10 Km to the south) using the freeway, then join the old road using a path near the Big Super Market.
This diving site has two major inconveniences. It is far from the diving centers of Beirut and near the Beirut International Airport. Actually,  a new runway is under construction at the Beirut International Airport, a part of this runway will be build on the water, so the visibility is very low most of the time. The submarine wreck is divided into two parts  distant from each other by some meters. The wreck lays at a depth averaging  between 40 and 45 meters. The two parts of the submarine are well preserved  and you could encounter lot of fish and morays.
